Sustainability is a practice I employ in everything I do. Whether it’s working in the construction industry, at my home or travelling, how I can reduce my impact on the environment is always top of mind. (Check out my YouTube video on sustainable travel VIDEO).
We have been focusing on designing buildings for sustainability for more than two decades, but we rarely take a close look at what we are doing during the course of construction. By creating a sustainable jobsite, you not only help the planet but also reduce waste and operational costs. Additionally, these practices can boost employee morale and productivity, making a positive environmental impact, and what a wonderful thing to market to your clients!
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle
Adopting the 3Rs can drastically cut down on waste and the demand for new resources. This will create significant savings not just in waste and energy consumption but for the project budget as well.
Top 7 Tips for Creating a More Sustainable Jobsite
- Electricity use:Turn off lights, computers and monitors in the trailer when not in use. Install daylight sensors in trailer lighting near windows and motion sensors on outdoor trailer lighting with daylight sensors to provide security without wasting energy.
- HVAC Systems:Who has been in a trailer with the AC blasting and the doors and windows open? Ventilation in trailers can be tricky. Make sure doors and windows remain closed while heat and AC are running. Regularly maintain HVAC systems to ensure they are running efficiently. Program the thermostat to allow temperature override for nights and weekends.
- Office Equipment: Turn off or unplug devices that are not in use like coffee pots, copiers, etc. to avoid phantom energy consumption.
- Kitchen: Provide a sink and dishwasher. Get rid of all single use items like paper cups, plastic flatware. Use real plates, bowls, silverware, and cups.
- Water: 5-gallon water jugs aren’t just for the trailer, but the field too. Add a manual water pump to the top of a 5-gallon jug ( https://a.co/d/hgOwgK8) and some reusable containers for the field. Get rid of paper and plastic cups and more importantly, plastic water bottles, one of the worst contributors to plastic and water waste and pollution. Reusable water bottles with your company logo are always a great gift! (Check out my blog on plastic pollution BLOG.)
- Recycling Programs:Ensure you are providing recycling for the trailers as well as the jobsite. Clearly label receptacles with what is recyclable in your area.
- Reduce Paper Use:Encourage a paperless processes by implementing appropriate software platforms such as Bluebeam Project, Bluebeam Sessions, Procore, and other digital tools for communication, collaboration, and document management. If printing is necessary, set printers to double-sided by default.
Conclusion
By taking steps to improve energy efficiency, reduce waste, and foster a culture of sustainability, jobsites can significantly lower their environmental impact while reaping benefits like cost savings, improved employee satisfaction, and a positive corporate reputation. Small changes can lead to significant results, making the journey towards sustainability both achievable and rewarding.
